How to hang your artwork

Where, What Size, And How Do I Hang my painting. This is an act of placement, presence, and care.

1. Perfect Placement

Start with the wall, not the nail. Look at the space and notice what size feels honest there. A larger piece holds presence on a wide wall; a smaller one feels more intimate. If you’re unsure, choose the size your gut keeps returning to.

For height, aim for the center of the artwork to sit around 57 inches from the floor — close to natural eye level. If you’re hanging above furniture, leave 6–12 inches of breathing room so the piece doesn’t feel pressed against it.

2. Supplies

Gather what you need before you start: a measuring tape, a level, a pencil, and painter’s tape. Check the back of the artwork so you know what kind of hardware it has — sawtooth, hooks, or wire.

Smaller pieces usually come with a sawtooth hanger and only need a hammer and a nail. Larger framed pieces hang from a wire and do best with a picture‑frame hook for stability. Knowing what you’re working with makes the whole process easier.

3. Measure for Accuracy

Before committing to the nail, let the wall breathe. Use painter’s tape or a light pencil mark to map out where the piece might live. Step back. See how the room responds.

If your piece hangs by wire, pull the wire up with your fingers until it’s taut and measure the distance from the top of the wire to the top of the frame. That number tells you how far below your mark the nail should go. The wire stays hidden — this step just helps you get the height right.

It’s really easy to mess this part up. I’ve put more holes in walls than I care to admit. Just re‑measure — it saves you every time.

4. Hang Your Painting

Once your mark is set, place your hook or nail there. If the piece has a wire, lift it onto the hook and let it settle. If it has a sawtooth hanger, set it gently onto the nail until it feels steady. Adjust, step back, and let the piece find its place.

5. Give Space to Breathe

If you’re hanging more than one piece, give each one room to exist. A spacing of 2–5 inches works for most arrangements. Triptychs or sets of three usually feel balanced with 4–6 inches between each piece.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s letting each artwork breathe without crowding the others.
